چکیده

40 A global coupled climate model representative of the current generation of models is 41 shown to simulate most first order aspects of El Niño events, their teleconnections over 42 North America, and the associated observed patterns of extremes in present-day climate. 43 Future El Niño teleconnection patterns over the U.S. are projected to shift eastward and 44 northward due in part to the different midlatitude base state atmospheric circulation in a 45 warmer climate. Consequently, projections for the changes in the patterns of extremes 46 over the U.S. during future El Niño events include: decreases of frost days over the 47 southwestern U.S expand northward and eastward; increases in intense precipitation in 48 the SW U.S. expands eastward and areas in the SE U.S. become stronger; and decreases 49 of heat wave intensity over much of the southern tier of states turn to increases. 50 51 52

Impacts of 1997–98 El Niño– Generated Weather in the United States

The societal, economic, and environmental impacts of weather events and climate conditions in the United States normally vary spatially across the nation, and for any given period such as a season or year, the impacts reveal a mix of regional winners and losers. This was certainly true with the impacts resulting from El Niño-generated weather during 1997–98. The early official predictions of mo...

El Niño: Catastrophe or Opportunity

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, a periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific, generates a significant proportion of short-term climate variations globally, second only to the seasonal cycle. Global economic losses of tens of billions of dollars are attributed to extremes of ENSO (i.e., El Niño and La Niña), suggesting that these ev...

El Niño - Southern Oscillation

El Niño (The Christ Child) is named for the unusual warm current of water flowing south near the coast of Peru whose onset is often felt near Christmas. This mostly regular event has a great effect on the Peruvian anchovy industry, at one time, one of the most productive fisheries in the world. When cold-water upwelling stops reducing the amount of nutrients in the surface waters off the South ...

El Niño

El Niño is probably one of the most widely publicized oceanic phenomena. If there’s one single reason for that it’s probably the fact that El Niño’s presence can be quite catastrophic. During this lab, we will explore the phenomenon of El Niño, which of the ocean and the weather conditions relate to it, how it begins and how it ends. We will also look at the current conditions and see if we can...
